Every twelve years players from Cennestre, City of Light, enter the Ranking to determine which of the elite Blood Houses will rule for the coming twelve years.

When her twin sister is murdered with a Rose blade – an Elder Blood weapon of mythical status with the power to kill in-game and in real life – BylaWranne of Blood House Wranne is forced to take her place, despite her dislike of gaming and all it involves. An awkward, reluctant noob, she struggles to get past beginner levels and is completely out of her depth in the desolate, treacherous Fae world of the ritual RPG.

But as more players begin to die in a game designed to protect them, Byla realises that someone or something is trying to destroy the Ranking and Cennestre itself. To stop them, she will have to learn and level up fast, if she is to do what has not been done for millennia – complete the core game quest and open the Thirteenth Gate.
